چکیده
Global-Scale Observations of Limb and Disk (GOLD) disk measurements far ultraviolet molecular nitrogen band emissions are used to retrieve column integrated temperatures (Tdisk), which representative the lower-and-middle thermosphere. The present work develops a new approach assimilate Tdisk in whole atmosphere community climate model with thermosphere-ionosphere eXtension using data assimilation research testbed ensemble adjustment Kalman filter. Nine days data, 1–9 November 2018, assimilated. Analysis state variables such as thermospheric effective temperature (Teff, airglow layer temperature), ratio atomic oxygen densities (O/N2), electron content compared control simulation that is only constrained up ∼50 km. It observed GOLD improves analysis states when simulation. states, particularly, Teff, O/N2, density (ECD) their measurement counterparts for validation assimilation. Teff O/N2 O/N2. Data Assimilation Using the Global Ionosphere-Thermosphere Model
We consider a data assimilation technique for coupled ionospheric and thermospheric dynamics. The Global Ionosphere-Thermosphere Model (GITM) is used to simulate the ionospheric and thermospheric dynamics, and evaluate the performance of the data assimilation scheme that estimates the ion densities and flow speeds. This estimation technique is based on the state dependent Riccati equation (SDRE...
متن کاملEquinoctial transitions in the ionosphere and thermosphere
Equinoctial summer/winter transitions in the parameters of the F2-region are analyzed using ground-based ionosonde and incoherent scatter observations. Average transition from one type of diurnal NmF2 variation to another takes 20–25 days, but cases of very fast (6–10 days) transitions are observed as well. Strong day-time NmF2 deviations of both signs from the monthly median, not related to ge...
متن کاملAdaptive Model Refinement for the Ionosphere and Thermosphere
Mathematical models of physical phenomena are of critical importance in virtually all applications of science and technology. This paper addresses the problem of how to use data to improve the fidelity of a given model. We approach this problem using retrospective cost optimization, a novel technique that uses data to recursively update an unknown subsystem interconnected to a known system. App...
متن کاملEmulating the Thermosphere-Ionosphere Electrodynamics General Circulation Model (TIE-GCM)
We analyse the response of the TIE-GCM computer model of the upper atmosphere to atmospheric tides at its lower boundary and to variations of night-time ionization rates. TIE-GCM is an expensive code, and we choose to use our thirty evaluations of the model to construct an emulator, and then use the emulator for the analysis. TIE-GCM has some non-standard features, namely a periodic input, and ...
متن کامل9 Jupiter ’ s Thermosphere and Ionosphere
Jupiter’s upper atmosphere forms the boundary between the lower atmosphere and interplanetary space. As the topmost layer, the thermosphere absorbs solar extreme ultraviolet (EUV) radiation and charged particles from the magnetosphere that cause dissociation and ionization of thermospheric molecules. Subsequent chemistry establishes the ionosphere and the densities of minor, photoand electroche...
